Mayors forge closer ties

The three golden triangle mayors are positive closer ties were forged at a special Tauranga meeting.

It was the first time such a meeting had been organised.

The three regions already work closely together, but the meeting helped lay the foundations for a more coordinated relationship.

Opportunities to improve transport and logistics between the regions were identified at the meeting, which was organised by the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce.

"We are a major part of New Zealand's economic powerhouse, that's the central North Island up to Auckland and just north of there", says Stuart.

"Just imagine if we got our road, our rail, our sea and air really integrated and working well & that would be good for all of New Zealand."

Julie Hardaker spoke about each region creating efficiencies, lowering costs and improving production.

She also spoke about the golden triangle cities working closer together on tourism opportunities, which Stuart agreed with.

"It's great to support your own tourism communities, but it would be a better opportunity if we collaborated more on that."

Len Brown spoke about Auckland attracting events and how the city lost the Ellerslie Flower Show to Christchurch and a failed deal for the V8 Supercars because of bureaucracy.

There are now discussions underway to continue the meeting between the three mayors on a regular basis.

"There was some thought that we could take it to Hamilton and Auckland to engage with their people,"says Stuart.

"I would like it to happen (more regularly) so we can report on progress & it's not just a talkfest and then report."
